Preface
Flee Babylon is a book about man and his fate on earth. God created man to live on the earth like a royalty from diseases, oppression and poverty. Man’s spiritual enemy would not always allow him to live in obedience to God so that he would not enjoy his divinely given heritage. Through inducement to disobey divine will for him, Satan has been successful in taking away man’s blessings, subsequently leading the man of disobedience into a spiritual place of banishment called Babylon. A goddess who rules over that place is also called the “Mystery Babylon.”
Many people are in the spiritual Babylon today by extension under the domination of that demonic kingdom. The knowledge that would enable a person to escape from that spirit of plunder and adversities is what this book is all about. After reading, your faith will take up wings like an Eagle’s unto salvation. In this book, you would be able to identify what the scripture describes as “Satan’s so – called deep secrets.” The doctrine of Balaam Principalities and powers use it to plot wicked conspiracies against people and nations. The understanding of such a wicked strategy would enable one to be on the guard for his own life and wealth.
CHAPTER ONE
The Great Conspiracy
Babylon was once a great and prosperous city where several important and powerful kings reigned. The site of old Babylon is to be found in the present day Iraq, in the Middle East. What remains of Babylon is just a great mound of earth and some archeological sites to remind us of its existence. Babylon was the city of the biblical king Nebuchadnezzar. The story of Babylon is deep in ancient history, but in this book, we will be discussing the spirituality of Babylon. How the spirituality of Babylon affected and will affect humanity because of idolatry, especially the worship of the goddess Ishtar will be our focus.
Ishtar is a fertility goddess. Like all fertility gods and goddesses, the worship of Ishtar is marked by he practice of sexual immorality. That explains why shrines of fertility gods and goddesses have some people who render services as male and female temple prostitutes. The Babylonians and the Assyrians regard Ishtar as chief among the many gods and goddesses they worship. It is not surprising therefore, that Nebuchadnezzar II built and dedicated a magnificent gate known as the Ishtar Gate to the fertility goddess in Babylon. Not done with that, the most important street, the procession street, led straight from the gate to Ishtar temple in Babylon. From Rome to Ephesus, Ishtar was known by different names, to the Sidonians, she was Astarte, in Egypt, she was Isis, to the Greeks, she was Artermis and to the Romans, she was Diana. Names apart, her primary mode of worship in every land remains the same – the practice of cultic prostitution. In the Bible that deity was mentioned in both OT and the NT scriptures. The most picturesque mention of her name was probably in Zechariah 5:7 where she was described as “wickedness” and in verse 11 she was to be enthroned in the land of Babylonia. How the fertility gods and goddesses affected the destiny is what this book has intended to examine. It is also envisaged that it might be of value to retrace one’s steps from modern idolatry and avoid its bitter consequences.
In order to focus our discussion, we should take most of our examples of the effects of sexual immorality from the history of the Israelites as recorded in the Holy Bible. When the children of Israel broke the covenant of God by practicing idolatry, He sent prophets to warn and ask them to repent, After several attempts at calling Israel to repentance fell on deaf ears, God appointed Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, as his punishing rod on Israel. Israel was conquered and taken in captivity into Babylon where idol worship was a state religion. In Babylon, Israel suffered humiliation and the most unimaginable anguish of soul. As the scriptures said, the records of those historical events were intended that we who will take correction and resolve not to make the mistakes of Israel.
“Get out of Babylon.” Why was the urge to get out Babylon? Indeed Babylon was destined for destruction, therefore the people who are called by the name of God should not be found in her, because Babylon was a center of idolatry. In fact idolatry was a state religion, disobedience to the decree requiring all citizens to worship idol was punishable by death (Dan 3:5-6). It is instructive to understand at this point, some of the ideas behind the worship of fertility gods:
“The fertility principle was often defied as a mother goddess (See Diana) as images from Ephesus indicates. This involved the worship of sex and the glorification of prostitution. Chief among the deities of the Babylonians and the Assyrians was the Mesopotamian immoral goddess of lust and procreation, Ishtar.” 2
What is implied from that quotation is that sexual immorality was an important act of worship in the temple of fertility gods and goddesses. For Nebuchadnezzar to have decreed idol worship into law in Babylon, he has also impliedly decreed sexual immorality into law, refusal to worship is punishable by death. That was the kind of situation prophet Daniel faced at a time in Babylon. But God hates idolatry and impliedly, sexual immorality.
God summoned the effects of idolatry as acts that “will not benefit you.”3 In order to understand how God despised idol worship, even earnings from temple prostitutes, presented as payment for vows, are rejected by God (Deut. 23:17). God wanted his people to get out of Babylon because it typifies the center of Satanic (the Beast) reign. Sexual immorality, under the cover of idolatry was and has always been the easiest means of getting the number of the beast or Satan; this is the spirit that the Pauline gospel refers to as “the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience.” 4 In (1 John 3:8) we are made to understand that Christ manifested to destroy the works of Satan. For that reason, Satan and his demons continually oppose the manifestation of sons of God through sexual immorality. It is Satan’s hidden agenda; it is no wonder that Balaamism is described, as “Satan’s so called deep secret.” Shrines of fertility gods were under cover of divinities are actually glorified houses of prostitutes.
Spiritually speaking, anyone who is sexually immoral is in Babylon. It is ordained that those who are sexually immoral should be banished for as the scripture out it “They will not remain in the Lord’s land.” They will go to the place of judgment, (Hosea 9:3). Even as the old physical Babylon was destroyed because of the sins found in her. In view of the foregoing therefore, flee Babylon; flee sexual immorality.
The word of God says: “As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah along with her neighbouring towns.”5so shall Babylon be destroyed. Sodom and Gomorrah were wiped out of the face of the earth because of the offences of sexual immorality. As God told Lot to come out of Sodom so is He is saying to us about Babylon: “Come out of her my people! Run for your lives!”6 Some of the mysterious factors and powers behind the spiritual Babylon used to keep man in bondage are the subject of this book. Notwithstanding, there is hope, hope for a spiritual and physical restoration of man. The road to freedom may be bumpy because there are contending forces determined to deprive man of his good. There is a spiritual conspiracy against man; Babylon is at the center of that conspiracy. This conspiracy was intended to cause man to rebel against God through idolatry and subsequently banished into Babylon. Like Sodom and Gomorrah, which practiced sexual immorality, Babylon is doomed. As there was a physical Babylon, there is a spiritual one. It exists anywhere there is satanic reign. The influence and power of the Spiritual Babylon is greater than the physical one. The Spiritual Babylon will be the last standing vanishing world order, therefore leave Babylon, leave that varnishing world order.
Before the sons of Jacob found themselves in Babylon, there were scheming, spiritually and physically, against them. It was the sort of scheming which Balaam and Balak did against the Israelites at Peor. This time around, there was Babylon on the one side and enemies within.
“There is a conspiracy among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem. They have returned to the sins of their forefathers who refused to listen to my words. They have followed other gods to serve them. The Lord Almighty who planted you has decreed disaster for you, because the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done evil and provoked me to anger by burning incense to Baal.” 7
Just as king Balak instigated sorcery against Israel in order to overcome them, Babylon could not be absolved on this since they were the ones bent on conquering and plundering this time. Succeed, they did. Israel and Judah were conquered. The best of human and material resources, from Judah and Israel, were taken to Babylon. Sexual immorality under the covers of idol worship caused Israel and Judah to be taken into captivity as slaves of the Babylonians.
Jeremiah’s prophecy may seem normal for people who had sinned against God, but what led to the sin of Judah could have been another Balaam-Balak conspiracy. In the same way that king Balak plotted the ruin of Israel at Peor so does the spiritual Babylon plots ruins of people and nations (Habakkuk 2:10) They always engages in sorceries and magic spells to bring their targets under their control. Isaiah again has this to say about Babylonian wickedness:
“Go down, sit in the dust, Virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground without a throne. Keep on then, with your magic spells and with your many sorceries, which you have labored at sine childhood. Perhaps you will cause terror.” 8
That was the art of Balaam-Balak conspiracy, use of sorceries against their target in order to weaken those people’s relationship with God. Babylon never fails to plot but unlike Balak Babylon succeeded to take the best out of Judah into captivity.
Inciting Judah and Israel to worship idols, is like the spell Prophet Balaam cast upon the children of Israel at Shittim. Balak, king of Moab wanted to cast a spell upon Israel so that they would not conquer him like they did king Og and king Sihon on their journey into the Promised Land. Balak hired a sorcerer/prophet to cast a spell on Israel but did not succeed after many attempts. God resisted Balak and Balaam’s attempts till the prophet Balaam revealed to Balak that the only way o defeat Israel was to find means of making their God to become angry with them and remove his protective shield over them. After consultation with his Midianite allies, king Balak sent some beautiful women to lure Israelites men to a feast in their idol shrines. After the feast, the women had sex with Israelite men. That as the breaking point and the consequence was disastrous. When God’s anger broke out in the camp of Israel, 24, 000 people died in a single day by plague sent by God. The plague was only stayed by Phinehas when he killed an Israelite man and a Midianite woman having sex in the camp. Eventually, both king Balak and prophet Balaam forfeited their own lives (Num. 31: 7-8). Sexual immorality is dangerous for God’s people. In order to avoid God’s warmth children of God should abstain from sexual immorality. When God’s vengeance was visited upon the Midianites because of their complicity in the affairs of Peor, emphasis was given to sexual promiscuity:
“Have you allowed all women to live?” He asked them, “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the Lord in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.” 9
The experiences of the Israelites in the hand of Nebuchadnezzar and at the hand of Balak king of Moab were not just historical events. They are physical examples of spiritual conspiracy in heavenly places against God’s people. That includes you and me. This was the more reason that in the book of revelation, Jesus, in his messages to the seven churches, warned about Balaamic conspiracies in some of the churches (Rev. 2:14). The Apostles also warned Christians about Balaamism in Jude 1:6,7 and in 2 Pet. 2:15.
From the foregoing, we were able to understand the weapon Prophet Balaam and king Balak used against Israel is still being used against God’s people today. This is so otherwise the gospel would not have said, “there will be” false teachers teaching the doctrine of Balaam. Sexual immorality, disguised in whatever form is still a very potent weapon against the children of God. We as the children of God should not be victims of such of a spiritual conspiracy.
As Balaam sold the children of Israel by sorcery to their enemy, king Balak, so our enemy, Satan and his demons are selling people and nations through sorceries, sexual immoralities and witchcraft (Nahum 3:4). Sexual immorality causes loss of wealth, either through fornication or adultery, this fact was attested to by Job and Prophet Jeremiah.
“If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour’s door, then may my wife grind another man’s grain, and may other men sleep with her. For that would have been shameful, a sin to be judged. It is a fire that burns to Destruction; it would have uprooted my harvest.” 10
That was the confession of an experienced religious man who had also been a very successful entrepreneur. He knew the effect of sexual immorality on one’s business, so he was very mindful of the fact. He made that statement to refute his friend’s insinuations that his problems in social and economic life were as a result of his sins. Job was somebody who knew God’s mind concerning wealth creation and maintenance. Sin, especially, sexual immorality is anti-prosperity. Again, Jeremiah wrote:
“Your wealth and your treasures I will give as plunder, without charge, because of all your sins throughout your country.”11
Satanic spirits take advantage of the sentence – God passed on sexual immorality to transfer wealth from ignorant people to those who worship them. Those spirits could also enforce the death sentence passed on idolatry (Exodus. 22:20) why this knowledge has not been in people’s consciousness is a mystery. It is but the highest form of demonic conspiracy against man. This wickedness flourishes because it is a spell, the sorceries of the spiritual Babylon.
